Posted by: Rob_G on Monday, May 26, 2008 - 06:22 PM
General News and Information From the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune

By ROBERT IMRIE
Associated Press Writer

WAUSAU — Skyrocketing gasoline prices nearing $4 a gallon are not scaring campers and their big rigs from state parks, the director said Monday.

“Our advance reservations are up 7 percent over last year,” said Bill Smith of the state Department of Natural Resources. “We are expecting a very active summer.
We are not seeing any trends suggesting a high level of cancellations.”

Before Lisa Mascio-Thompson and her husband ventured off to the woods for a camping trip with their 2-year-old son, they set up camp in their back yard.

The New Albany couple soon discovered the test was worth the effort.

“Luckily, we did that first instead of going far away because we were back inside within an hour,” Mascio-Thompson recalled. “Lucas was freaking out with all the noises and shadows. It was quite an experience.”

99% of Car Towing Capacity Lost Since 1970's
Posted by: Rob_G on Monday, January 22, 2007 - 09:42 PM
General News and Information -- Added by Rob_G -- This is a great article with an amazing link to a new type of towing guide. It takes the Trailer Life yearly tow ratings information to the next level. If you're looking for a new vehicle you really need to check out the site in the article.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The shift in consumer preference to SUVs and light trucks for family transportation was driven not just by the desire for better comfort and safety -- since 1970 fuel economy mandates that resulted in downsized vehicles caused 99 percent of cars to lose their ability to tow basic recreational equipment, Sport Utility Vehicle Owners of America (SUVOA) announced today.

"The gutting of car towing capacity should be a wake up call that major lifestyle consequences could loom large as the nation contemplates the next wave of energy policy changes," SUVOA President Barry W. McCahill said. "The threat is on several fronts -- California's carbon dioxide law and the 10 states that have chosen to follow suit; the Supreme Court's upcoming decision on the regulation of carbon dioxide; and proposed federal legislation to increase federal fuel economy standards."
